Hiring a locksmith for a business is not the same as hiring one for a house. There are landlords, staff, exit rules and records to think about. These ten questions help you compare and decide.

Before you book

  1. Who will attend, and can they show identification? Expect a business name and a photo ID.
  2. What is the service call, and what could change the total? Ask for a range in writing.
  3. Is there an after-hours or mileage charge?

About the work

  1. Will you use non-damaging entry first? Drilling should be a last resort.
  2. Will the door still work as an exit? Exit hardware has to remain functional.
  3. Can the work be done outside trading hours?

About keys and records

  1. How many keys will be cut, and who receives them? Ask for a key register.
  2. Will the old keys stop working? If keys are lost, rekeying is the safe answer.
  3. Are copies restricted? A restricted system controls duplicates.

After the job

  1. What do I get in writing? An itemized invoice, a description of the work and any follow-up terms.

Authority

Expect to be asked who can authorize work on the premises. A locksmith who does not ask is not protecting you.

Red flags

  • A very low quoted price that jumps on arrival
  • Pressure to drill or replace hardware without explanation
  • No company name on the phone

Getting help

Extra checks for larger jobs

For work across several doors, ask for a written scope listing each door and what will be done. Ask about scheduling, since some jobs need to happen outside business hours.

Insurance and records

Ask for proof of insurance and how the locksmith documents work. A key register and a hardware schedule are useful for future maintenance.

After completion

Do a walk-through, test each door and keep a copy of the paperwork. See exit devices and fire code and door closers.
