Most home burglaries are opportunistic. The person looking for a way in wants to be quick, unseen and unchallenged. That is why the most effective deterrents are the ones that take away speed, cover or confidence, rather than the ones that simply look impressive.

Visibility beats gadgets

Motion-activated lighting at side and rear entrances, trimmed shrubs near doors and windows, and a clear view of the front door from the street all remove cover. A door that can be worked on in darkness, hidden behind a hedge or a fence, is far more attractive than one lit up and visible to neighbours.

Signs of occupancy

An obviously empty house, with mail piling up, no lights in the evening and a driveway covered in unshovelled snow, invites a closer look. Timers on lamps, a neighbour collecting mail and someone clearing snow while you are away all make the home look lived-in.

Dogs and cameras

A barking dog is a genuine deterrent for many opportunists because it draws attention. Cameras help mainly as a visible warning and as evidence afterwards; they do not physically stop entry. Video doorbells are useful for seeing who is at the door without opening it.

Where locks and doors come in

When someone does try a door, what stops them is the physical resistance of the opening. The common weak points are not the lock itself but the frame around it: short strike-plate screws, thin jambs and side doors with only a knob lock. A deadbolt with a full throw into a reinforced strike, hinges secured with long screws and a patio door with anti-lift protection turn a quick entry into a slow, noisy one, which is usually enough to make someone give up.

A sensible order of priorities

  1. Secure the weakest exterior door with a proper deadbolt and reinforced strike.
  2. Add lighting and remove cover at side and rear entrances.
  3. Stop hiding spare keys outside; use a keypad or a trusted neighbour instead.
  4. Rekey if you do not know who has keys.
  5. Add cameras and alarms once the physical basics are right.
